Maine
JR by Hannah Barnes, near Portland, Maine, 2009
Last summer I devoted myself to a project entitled From Venice Beach to the Venice Biennale. This summer I inadvertently scheduled two vacations that could be called From Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. I've only visited Maine once in the dead of winter in December 2009. Snow on the beach was startling and although beautiful for a moment, not what I imagine the coast to be.
I'm searching for another clear water sample on the East coast. I hope to climb a mountain Thoreau scaled in the 1840s. I hope not to feel the bone chilling cold that typified my first visit. I hope to understand why people love this state of Maine.
