A Major Task Completed

At the beginning of the summer, I made an astronomical list of all things I had to photograph and print. Of course, the more I photograph, the more there is to print and then I can't help but invent new things along the way. As of 1 AM this morning, I officially completed that list. The last two months have been very productive indeed.

Here is the "thinking wall" or all things in progress that will carry me through the fall.

They are working prints that are too dark, too light or gravitating toward magenta. The right 2/3rds comprises more Autobiography with the presentation of the swimsuits and towel needing to be resolved before the Atrium Gallery show. The top left is Artist Stalking, & the bottom left is the yet to be named continuation of characters with excessive behaviors. There's also a cute cat with a haircut who is posing in front of something I must respond to at some point from James Luckett.

Now summer vacation begins.

Changes in the Studio

Here are the racks where I have stored my photographs for the past ten years (with space for Oatmeal to sleep on top of the drawing pad). I kept adding more and more images and was worried that the whole system would soon fall off the wall.

Then came Matt Compton to the rescue! Matt built two shelves for me - they are taller than I thought they would be but have lots of growing room (despite not looking like there is much in this image). This is the very first photograph taken on my new camera:

Hooray!

Studio Overhaul

You know it's summer break when one has time to sort tacks by color

and sharpen all one's pencils in addition to seeing if every pen still has ink.

More on the studio tomorrow when it is light and I can take a photograph with my new camera (!).

First Day of Class & All I'm Thinking About is "How Many Days until Summer Break?"

Once upon a time last January I ordered archival boxes. Long story short... I finally got them today. I opened the box upside down and became more enthralled with the packing than reviewing notes for my lecture in Alternative Processes.

Boxes! Portfolio case for the Society for Photographic Education conference in March! Hooray!

There I am on James Luckett's photograph in my office. Has school really started? Still recovering from my cold and living in denial.

Hopefully there will be more news here soon on the Hannah, Jennifer, David, and JR "containment" proposal. Postcard Collective cards are in the works (mentally) and what do you know? Another case of Artist Stalking coming soon to a blog near you featuring (gasp) a female.

The Artist's Studio

Francis Bacon's Studio, 1992

Robert Rauschenberg in his studio, 1953

Donald Judd's Studio, Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas

Nick Cave's Studio with Assistants

Willem de Kooning in his studio, 1989

Allan McCollum, 1989

Bruce Nauman, On Mapping the Studio, 2001

James Luckett's studio #3N, 2010

Although this video makes me ill with the handheld camera movement, here's Alec Soth's studio.

The studio where I grew up that encompasses most things I think of when I dream of my own space: scale, light, the couch and chair, drafting table, sink, and oddly enough, the pencil sharpener (which i now own). Thinking heavily about the feasibility of getting my own studio outside the spare bedroom these days.

Studio Photographs of the Cakes

I have wanted to photograph the cakes (and their cuts and bruises) since the beginning of the semester. I desired an image of 9 in a cluster but then Serena, master photographer of all things 3-D, suggested some close-ups. I have never spent so much time moving a cake two inches to the left or four inches to the right but they look perfect. Thanks Serena!
