4 Years Today
Photograph from the Madonna Inn (more pink coming soon)
Four years ago today, this blog was born. 2014 was the first time I thought about letting it go because I was concentrating more on making artwork rather than discussing and documenting it. Also, it was a difficult year and perhaps I am letting that taint my productivity in posting more than it should. In any case, I will try for year five. I hope to finish my water and artist stalking series soon. Another trip abroad may be in the near future as well as an earthworks road trip redux. I am excited about all of this and will try to channel that here more so than I have in the past six months.

Somehow this blog marks its third birthday today. To celebrate, some of my favorite found photographs via (this book that keeps on giving) featuring Edward and his birthday cake.

Eric Conrad
Today is my friend Eric's birthday. He is also an object maker (and a painter, drawer, trickster, snow camper, and marvelous maker of anything ranging from waterproof jackets to loincloths). I've been thinking a lot about visiting him and his wife Yoonmi in Kansas soon. They aren't that far away but sometimes they feel like they really are. In my quest to make distance shorter & to feel slightly closer, this blog post will have to do.
From Eric's artist statement: "Figures, part-beast and part-human, struggle to regain a sense of identity, support and control within sensual, exuberant, violent, and/or co-dependent relationships. The works often contain narratives that deal with a coming to terms with past actions taken or current events not easily forgotten. Heaps of figures are mixed-up, entangled, disfigured and forced into co-dependent communities, fragile structures where there is potential for reconciliation and collapse."

"Something Between Want and Desire" Turns One!

Jodi Bieber, Sunday School, Nababeep, Northern Cape, 1998-99
I moved all the Nine Fake Cakes and Nine Bodies of Water posts from In Search of the Center to this site. Now it looks like I've had this blog for over a year but 29th December 2010 was indeed the first day Something Between Want and Desire went public. I haven't grown bored yet with this blogging business so here's to another year of seeing, creating, and thinking about art. Thank you for following!

Oh doughnuts...
I haven't separated myself from my new phone yet today. The new camera is quite adequate although this is a slightly pixelated representation. Thank you Li for the early birthday present! These are my new salt and pepper shakers to replace the kitten decapitated Martian women that I've had for far too long. Fake desserts and Jacinda are officially synonymous.
Working on the next round of postcards this weekend. Only two more fake cake floats to go!

Fake Cake Float: Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve, Travis County, Texas
We started the day off with my favorite pancakes on the planet (we are talking about potential last meal here: Banana and Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes at the Magnolia Cafe on Congress in Austin, Texas). It was also Nicole's birthday. Happy 30th!!!

The Lime Green cake arrived safely and was packed in the back seat ready for our drive to Hamilton Pool.

It was a muggy 94 degrees with sporadic sun. Let's just say the water felt great after the 1/4 mile steep hike down to the pool.

We spotted a couple LARGE catfish (visible in the middleground) and three small turtles swimming in the water.

Although I took the camera in the water for the first time today (yikes), I was not this person who had her non waterproof camera submerged half way in the water for over 20 minutes.

Nicole jumped in too only after we had to answer the question, "Is your cake a container?" i.e. are we hiding alcohol or a dog in it? No.

Hamilton Pool is beautiful though hard to photograph with such a dark cave-like background and bright sky above.

Nicole's amazing photo of Lime Green along the path to the falls.

"Is this a wedding cake?" "Excuse me. I don't mean to bother you but is that a cake?"

Dragonflies were attracted to the cake today.

This was the hardest photo shoot yet: sporadic sun, bad exposures because of the very dark background and very light top of the cake, and the focus is off. Not a successful day but I have one more option on Sunday (come on sunshine!!!).
